Penrith, York. June 20
We knew today would be mostly a travel day as we headed back to England after our Scottish adventure, but we tried to keep it interesting by stopping of at Penrith to have a hearty breakfast and to take a look at Richard III's first castle. I am in the unpopular camp of appreciating Richard III as presented by William Shakespeare. I have to say I was impressed with his humble beginnings.
Nic had not had the 'official English Breakfast' although Rob has definitely made some beautiful ones at home for him. Nic was very happy and he reported his best cup of tea so far in the UK.
I had salad for breakfast. I have been missing my vegetables and longing for a good salad. This just hit the spot.
These are the remains of Penrith Castle. It was fun to see people picnicking and playing on the ruins.
I loved the bold tree taking root up top.
Nic and I walk through every bakery we can find. It is like an addiction. We don't buy anything. We just look. This one was adorable.
We took the long way to York back through the Yorkshire Dales, this time on the eastern side. We stopped to hike up to the Lovely Seat. This is the 3rd highest Dale in the Yorkshire Dales. It was a quick walk, but there were great views, lovely bird-watching and we had a nice little nap with the sheep.
Lovely Seat.
Look! The sun came out! I only had on one jacket and two pairs of pants! It was like summer!!
I sat upon my throne like the Queen of England, or Lovely, as the case may be.
Nic took a shot with all of my empire.
And then I dug into my cranberry and orange scone on the way to Shirley and Ian's house. Neither Nic or Ian will any awards for great communication skills, but we made it to York and had a lovely dinner.
